St. Paul Criterium 2010
June 21, 2010Nature Valley Grand Prix
July 23, 2009A little while ago here in Minnesota, Nature Valley puts on a 5 day bike race around Minnesota. B and I volunteered to house a couple of racers because, A.) we had the room, as they really only wanted floor space, or a bed/couch if you had it, and B.) we like bikes, bike racing, and C.) we thought it would be fun. Well it turned out great, both of the racers we had were super nice so things at our house went great. While we couldn’t get to all the races B and I managed to get to a couple of really good ones. The Uptown Criterium as well as the Stillwater Criterium. Both proved to be great races.
For the images that I took I used mainly my Sigma 70-200mm or my Sigma 17-35mm with my Canon 40D. With the 17mm you feel up close and personal with the riders as they go by and at some points I even moved back a little bit as they kept inching their bodies over the curb as they leaned in to make their turns and I didn’t want to be the person that took anybody down during the race because that would have been bad. All in all it was a great time and I’m pretty sure we’ll volunteer again next year to be hosts if we can and if one of our friends doesn’t decide to head out for the race and need a place to sleep.

MNSCS Series
May 20, 2009So the other day while I was getting coffee in the coffee shop around the block, the shop also doubles as a bike shop. It’s a pretty great place. Well while I was there I saw a schedule for the upcoming mountain bike series, Minnesota State Championship Series (MNSCS) and the first race was going to be the next day in a suburb of St. Paul.
I thought why not get out there with my camera and a few flashes and work on my outdoor lighting of sports. So I packed up my gear( list of what I took below) and headed out to make some images.
Canon 40D
Canon 550EX Flash
Vivitar 285HV Flash
Canon 15mm Fisheye Lens
Sigma 17-35 Lens
Sigma 24-70 Lens
Sigma 70-200 Lens
3 Pocket Wizard Plus II’s
1 Super Clamp
1 SLR Gorilla Pod
I set the 550EX flash, @ 1/2 power on the gorilla pod and wrapped that around a small, tree/branch that was just along the path. I added a diffuser on that flash. And then I put the Super Clamp with the Vivitar 285 @1/4 power, on a tree branch on the other side of the trail pointing downward. After that it was just shoot shoot shoot. I think I came out with some great stuff that day and am looking forward to the next race to try out some more stuff.
